Dr. John Ed DeBebs has firmly established himself as a visionary artist renowned for his masterful use of colours to convey profound messages. Over the past 35 years, he has been a leading and influential figure in the Nigerian art scene, reshaping the very essence of colour aesthetics in Nigeria. His unique approach to colour, termed “the colour particle theory,” challenges conventional views by proposing that sensations of colour in nature are not independently transmitted within the atmosphere without surrogate particles. This bold philosophy is vividly reflected in his art, where he skillfully employs colours to create dynamic and impactful compositions reminiscent of the impressionist movement.
In addition to his remarkable artistic contributions, Dr. DeBebs is actively engaged in promoting ecocriticism through the groundbreaking exhibition “The Intersecting Worlds of Climate Change, the Mangrove & Art.” This vital initiative aims to raise awareness about the urgent need to preserve the Mangroves of Nigeria and to instill a collective sense of responsibility towards safeguarding our ecological surroundings. Through his dynamic eco-visual approach, Dr. DeBebs fearlessly confronts environmental issues and sheds light on the human impact on the environment.
Born Edwin Bebeteidoh in Owerri, Imo State, Dr. DeBebs obtained his Higher National Diploma in Painting from Auchi Polytechnic in 1980 and later earned his MA and PhD in Art Education from the University of Missouri, Columbia, USA. Following his education, he boldly pursued a career as a professional artist, leading to numerous successful group and solo exhibitions. His work has garnered widespread acclaim, recognized for its distinctive approach and compelling visual commentary on nature and the environment.
This is Dr. Ed DeBebs’ first exhibition in over 25 years.
